Awabi and Paua "Feathers" - Slide & Eye Stock
Awabi and Paua abalone inlay "Feathers". These are slabs of thin inlay stock. These are natural solid shell plates - not laminated shell stock. From this stock artisans can make slides and the Paua feathers are thick enough to make eyes as well.
The Awabi feathers are .7mm+ thick (.028- .029") by 30mm wide (1.15"+) by a length of 100 to 130 mm (3.9" to 5"). These do not lay flat but have a gentle curve to them. Awabi abalone is Haliotis gigantea from Japan.
The Paua abalone feathers are 1.6mm thick (.062" = 1/16") by 17 to 20mm wide (5/8" to 3/4"+) by a length of 85mm to 100 mm (3.3" to 3.9"). These lay flat. Paua abalone is from Australia.

A natural solid shell plate - not laminated shell stock. From this stock artisans can make violin and cello bow slides.
Awabi feathers are .7mm+ thick (.028- .029") by 33 to 37mm wide (1.3"+) by a length of 100 to 130 mm (3.9" to 5"). These slabs have a significant curve/curl to them and do not lay flat. They can be cut to make violin and cello slides. With the curve we suggest getting the slide by cutting across the width rather than going with the length. Note the thickness at .028" (.7+mm). These can be cut into slide size and glued to the ebony slide liner. Also ideal for making other inlays and any size eye.

Paua Pearl Feather
Paua Abalone Pearl "Feather".
A natural solid shell plate - not laminated shell stock. From this stock artisans can make violin, cello and bass bow slides.
The Paua abalone feathers are 1.6mm thick (.062" = 1/16") by 17 to 20mm wide (5/8" to 3/4"+) by a length of 85mm to 100 mm (3.3" to 3.9").
These lay flat and are very nice stock for inlays, bow slides and eyes.
